Environmental Events that are the Source of Racism

Slavery
  • Slavery is not only a huge part of African American history but also American history so much so that as, previously mentioned, it is taught throughout school systems as a part of history. Slavery was a horrible time in history where whites kidnapped, rapped, and overworked blacks for no pay. In addition to that not being taught in a lot of school systems today, when slavery ended, freedom was not given to black people. It would be several hundred of years until blacks received the natural right to do things such as go to certain facilities (i.e. Schools, restaurants, bathrooms, exc.), vote, marry who they like, exc. School systems are also known to suspend black students 4 as much as white students and diagnose black students with more mental disorders than that of whites. This creates a more difficult environment for a child to flourish in. To create a more beneficial environment for African American students one should first dedicate a larger portion to correct history. This would not only include a better understanding of slavery but also Africans before history and the corrections in inventions and black inventors who created them.

According to Pew Research   2016, the average income for blacks in 2014 was $43,300 compared to $71,300 of whites, & when looking at the head of families that have a college education the average income is $82,300 of blacks compared to $106,600 of whites, because of this and many other decades of whites average income always being more than blacks it could created a notion of economic inferiority for blacks. In addition to economic inferiority is inferior or poorer neighborhoods. Blacks tend to live in poorer areas so if one adds to the foundation that an individual is a product of their own environment that individual can create the notion that they are in fact inferior and can easily lose ambition to grow mentally and economically. This is one of the many aspects of Manichean thinking we learned about in Psychology of Race of Racism that society needs to eliminate.

  • Another white president being elected after Obama isn't detrimental to the progression of black people but Donald Trump being elected after Barack Obama is not only detrimental to black Americans but Americans in general. Within the first month of his presidency he took away health care without replacing it, banned 7 countries in the mid-east, sent bombs to Syria, and publically supports and promotes building the wall to keep Mexicans out. He additional holds chaotic rallies where he speaks disrespectfully about women and motivates crowds to violently get rid of black protestors.
